Our first annual MHS Snowball Dance, scheduled to take place in Monroe High’s commons on Dec. 10, was cancelled due to lack of attendees. Senior Student Council member, Kayla Keller said that they had to cancel the dance because they sold less than their required minimum of 300 tickets by Dec. 7.
She disappointedly said that there were many reasons of why people did not buy tickets to go to the dance, but she insisted on her hope that the senior class of 2012 would get involved more before it is too late.
A few reasons Student Council members believe are the cause of such a small turnout, was the fact that the Snowball Dance was very short notice and was put in the busiest month of the year—December, where many people are spending their extra money on gifts for the holidays or just spending more of their time with their loved ones in general.
Keller did admit that student council did not advertise as much as they would have liked to and when asking around, many did not even know about the Snowball Dance, or if they did it was the bare minimum of information.
Sophomore Kayla Bates said when asked if she was attending the Snowball Dance, “I didn’t even know the dance was still going on because they had only mentioned it once or twice.”
With all this said, our senior class cannot let the blame fall all on our Student Council members; our senior class as a whole must all come together and find ways to begin fundraising and getting involved for our senior prom, because even though we have yet to notice… Prom is right around the corner, and just as had Keller stressed, “All of this is for us seniors.”
