In the media, shows, and movies, horses are portrayed as best friends, transportation, and sometimes even saviors. Like in the movie Flicka, where the horse is not only her best friend and pet, she is also what saves her from herself. Some of the filmmakers use horses as inspirational characters, like in the movie Secretariat, the horse is born so small, nobody wants or believes in him except for one person and the he turns out to be a champion.
Horses are like humans. Some of them act, some work, and others are groomed and seen as pets or an added member of a family, just like a dog is.
On Nov. 18, the government passed a bill to allow horses to be slaughtered and become human food. (abcnews.com)
Teacher Jennifer Davis, who is excited to see the movie Warhorse out in theatres now, said she believes horses are majestic creatures and is disappointed that the government would pass such a law. “I was not aware they passed a bill about this,” said Jennifer Davis, a MHS teacher when she was asked her opinion on horse slaughtering. “It’s not right, they shouldn’t be used as meat when they are like pets.”
Laws about slaughtering horses have not all been made, but there are slaughterhouses ready to take full advantage of this new bill.
“We will be participating when we know what the laws are,” said Tim Scholl, manager of Scholl’s Slaughterhouse in Blissfield, Michigan. He continued on, saying, ”The meat from the horses is good meat that people can make good use of.”
One student, junior Caitlyn Smith, is a horse-lover and was appalled by the news.
“It’s bull crap. They shouldn’t be allowed to do that, would they like it if someone did that to them,” said Smith.
