On Friday, Dec. 2, Monroe High School Varsity team concurred SMCC’s varsity’s team at its high school basketball court. The final score was 56-40. started out with the ball, and then Monroe stole the ball and scored 3 points. Monroe kept a lead throughout the whole game. SMCC tried to keep up with Monroe’s scores, but it consequently failed. Strauss, a shooting guard, scored 33 points, and tied the school record for points scored. The record was previously held by Missy Todd.
Monroe’s varsity team’s goals are to beat all the local teams in the Monroe County, have 70 percent of the free throws not missed and to win the basketball league. “It was amazing, especially to beat my own team” said Strauss, “I think we worked really hard as a team.” Head varsity coach Gretchen Elliott said she was very pleased with the effort and hard work of my athletes.
“We forced SMCC to commit a lot of turnovers with our defense. I thought we played together as a team and were determined to win. Obviously, Jordan Straus had an outstanding game with 33 points. It is a great accomplishment to go into their gym and win by 17 points,” said Elliot. “It is always exciting to play our cross-town rival, SMCC. I knew going in that it was going to be a tough battle, but I felt that we were prepared,” Strauss said the team looks forward to trying to complete all their goals this season together. Elliot said she is very proud of her team and is excited for the remainder of the season. The next home game is tonight at 7:30 pm. against Flat Rock.
