The Monroe High School Boys Tennis Team finished up its season with one win and one tied match. The team was happy to beat across town rivals, Bedford High School in the match, which was held on Sept. 14 at Bedford’s home court.
Each player won his/her individual match for that game, leading to an exciting 7-1 win for Monroe. Senior and Team Captain, Erik Knapp, said, “It was probably our best match. It was really good because Bedford is our rival.” This was the only match that Monroe had won this season.
When asked how his last high school tennis season turned out, Knapp said, “We played a really tough division and competed hard.”
He also expressed his expectations for next season, after he leaves, saying, “We have a lot of good beginners. If everyone keeps playing, it’ll be a good team next year. It was a bittersweet moment for the seniors of the team because it was sad, but happy to be over with.” He continued complimenting his coach, Bob Matusik, saying, “It was a good, fun season. Coach did well by making it fun but keeping it competitive.”
The team’s biggest competition was Ann Arbor Pioneer. The game had been postponed, building anticipation for the match. The boy’s played hard but unfortunately lost 8-0. The team’s stand out players includes, Knapp, Josh Macbay, Andrew Rassel, and Christopher Hochradel, who are all seniors. Sophomore Itsuki Okamoto was also a star player this season, playing hard amongst his older team mates.
“I am proud of them,” Matusik says. He also gives his overview of the exciting season saying, “Overall, it went well. We played hard and we had fun.”
