The Monroe High Girl’s Swimming team anxiously awaits the start of the South Eastern Conference regionals in November with a record of 6-1 this season.
Captain Skylar Teal said the team is more united this year and everyone is getting along great. “It’s showing in everything we do,” she said.
The star swimmers this season include Morgan Miller, Olivia Teal, Lindsey Cousino, Sam Myers, and Taylor Weatherholt. These girls qualified for the MISCA meet, which is the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association, which will be held on Oct. 14 and 15 at Eastern Michigan University. Nearly all of the girl’s meets are away with only one being at home, which will be senior night. At this home meet, the team will face cross-town rivals, St Mary’s Catholic Central. Teal says they will definitely win. The meet is on Nov. 8 and will especially feature all of the seniors on the team.
When asked who the team’s biggest competition was, Teal said “either Saline or the [Ann Arbor] Pioneers”. The team will face Saline on Oct. 13 and then the Pioneers on Oct. 20. While they are unsure how they will do Sophomore Kayla Bates has confidence saying, “We’re getting better and working harder every day. Everyone is doing their share to make our team stronger.” There is also a possibility that some of the individual swimmers could make it to the state competition in their events.
The team lost its last match against Ann Arbor Huron with a score of 43-143. But they expect to win its upcoming meet away, at Chelsea, on Oct. 6. Then on Oct. 27, the team will swim against Bedford High School, another rival of Monroe High School.
