“Shadow and Bone” is the new Netflix original released April 23 based on the bestselling novels “Shadow and Bone” and “Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo. Starring Ben Barnes and Freddy Carter, the show follows Alina Starkov as she discovers her powers that could change the fate of the world along with Kaz Brekker and his gang who go on a heist that could make the difference between freedom and servitude.

“Shadow and Bone” hit its audience of fans of the books hard with its amazing adaptation. The plot offered the perfect amount of content from the books along with new content that made fans thrilled to keep watching. With amazing CGI effects and a casting near perfect to the descriptions in the book, for readers the show was a real hit.

The problem that occurred though came when looking at the show in the lens of someone who had not read the books. Without the background knowledge, the three storylines of the show could become rather confusing and hard to follow. A lot of the terms used in the fantasy storyline were never really described which could leave new fans lost. And with the multiple characters doing a variety of different things at the same time, new watchers could easily have a hard time understanding what exactly was going on.

Altogether “Shadow and Bone” had a great start for season one. With amazing actors, many of which were not as well known, and captivating world building, the show was really fun to watch and get into. If the issues for non-readers get figured out for season two, this show could easily be Netflix’s next big hit.
