REVIEW: Taylor Swifts Evermore has strong impact

Taylor Swift surprised fans on Dec. 11 with her second album of the year – “Evermore.” The album quickly earned a place in people’s hearts with its deep and emotional storytelling lyrics.

Swift has been producing music since the success of her debut self-titled album in 2006. Swift has released a new album roughly every one to two years, making up quiet the discography of music in her time as a widely known artist. Some of her best-known albums include “Red,” “Reputation,” “1989,” and “Lover.”

“Evermore” is a sister album to the record “Folklore,” which was also released in 2020. The two records have a similar feel and sound to them. Swift noted on her Instagram, “To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We choose to wander deeper in.” The lyrics also revolve around themes of love, marriage, grief and heartbreak throughout the album.

The lyrics were very meaningful and heartfelt through the storytelling in the songs, consisting of clever wording that brought emotion to listeners. For example, one of the songs that stood out the most was definitely “Champange Problems.” This song tells a story of someone rejecting his/her significant other’s marriage proposal and getting backlash and judgement for it. “She would have made such a lovely bride, what a shame she’s f–ked in the head they said.” Also added into the mix is the person’s possible mental illness based on one’s own interpretation of the song.

Arguably the most heartfelt and dear song on this entire album is “Marjoire,” a tribute to Swift’s grandmother that has since passed away when she was 13. This song expresses deep emotions such as grief and strong longing for someone. One of the biggest things that I noticed in this song is the way she included the comfort and longing of missing someone. Swift told about the feeling that even though her loved one is gone she still feels her. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were still around. I know better, but I still feel you all around.” But in the lyrics she also recognized the longing of missing someone and not having that comfort from before. “I should’ve asked you questions. I should’ve asked you how to be. Asked you to write it down for me. Should’ve kept every grocery store receipt ‘Cause every scrap of you would be taken from me.”

The lyrical talent shown in Swift’s new studio-released album can be best seen in the track “Champagne Problems,” along with “Marjoire.” Each are written and sang with such emotion that hit the listeners as if it were their own lives. The album was composed of a combination of stories that a lot of people were able to connect with, and equally relate to as well. Overall “Evermore” is a very great record with intense emotions and feelings that hit fans and listeners like a tidal wave.
