MHS football loses close game against Chelsea

Monroe lost its second game of the season last Friday night by a score of 26-17 against Chelsea High School.

The game started off with a kick return for a touchdown for Chelsea. Monroe drove right down the field and senior Noberto Flores kicked a 39-yard field goal to get the game within four. Midway through the second quarter, Chelsea got a one-yard touchdown to go up 13-3. Chelsea added another touchdown to take a 19-3 lead at half.

Monroe needed something to start this second half, and they got it; Monroe got a big interception. This led to a big second half from Monroe’s defense pitching a third quarter shutout. Monroe got a much-needed touchdown with a 33-yard run from junior Ashton Elmer.

Monroe got the two point conversion to get the game to one possession, trailing 19-11 late in the fourth. Monroe’s defense got another stop to give Monroe a chance with the ball down by eight. Monroe drove down the field with ease until they got into the redzone. Chelsea’s defense forced Monroe to a fourth down.

On fourth and six Jacob Blosser threw the ball up and tipped to Tristian Panza for the touchdown to get within two. All Monroe needed was the 2 point conversion to tie the game, but Chelsea’s defense stepped up and came up huge. Chelsea got a garbage touchdown to win 26-17.

The story of this game was missed opportunities for Monroe. Monroe had chances to win the game, they threw an interception, and turned it over on downs on Chelsea’s side of the field. However, Monroe did not give up and fought very hard against a very good team and had a chance to win or force overtime late in the game. Monroe hosts Dearborn for the first round of the playoffs at 7pm next Friday.
