It’s that time of year again where people are doused with roses and showered with undivided attention from their loved one…..Disgusting! The fact that people need a day to remind themselves that they love someone is disappointing.

Every year people of all ages are forced to come up with new, extravagant ideas to please their significant other. This is unhealthy for relationships and may end up hurting more than helping it. Valentine’s Day is also one big competition, where people compete to see who can spend more money on their significant other. The whole holiday is just a way for businesses to make more money.  Valentine’s Day has just become a capitalistic proposition.

Even If you like the idea of Valentine’s Day, it’s poorly executed. The candy is pretty bad. Every time you get a box of chocolate, it’s like a gamble, either you get a decent one or chocolate that tastes like chalk. The best Valentine’s Day candy are those candy hearts with cheesy words on them, and they’re not even that good. They just look good by comparison because the rest are so bad.

I can understand that people enjoy just being in each other’s company but why should there be a day for that. If you really enjoy being together, then you should be able to do that any day. Why does there have to be a day for buying a bunch of crap to impress your partner, just so it can be thrown out within the week.

Instead of Valentine’s Day, everybody should just do something special for their significant other every once in a while. That way it’s not expected, but it shows that you care. There’s no pressure to rush and make reservations anywhere before everyone else does or to buy an expensive gift. It could be as little as taking a walk together or as big as dressing up and going somewhere nice. The point is that you don’t need a day to tell someone you love them because you should be able to tell them every day.
