Monroe United hockey team discuss ongoing season

It’s the sound of a puck dropping; the sound of skates scraping; it’s the sound of fans cheering; or for junior Bo French, it’s “team bonding and the feeling of being out there on the ice.”

Led by Monroe captain senior Evan Zub and Jefferson assistant captains seniors Josh Alexander and Dennis Gundick, Monroe United hockey team is in the middle of its 2016-2017 season. So far, the Jefferson High School and Monroe High School boys that have come together to form the team have had one win, four losses, and a tie.

“We lost some games we should have won, but we’re doing pretty good now,” French said.

The team’s turnaround is coming at just the right time, too. The team’s major rival is Monroe’s catholic counterpart, Saint Mary’s Catholic Central (SMCC). This rivalry is long-going and well-known. The two teams share the same home venue of Monroe Multi-Sports Complex, but that doesn’t stop the rivalry. They have not yet played each other but are scheduled to on Feb. 11 and Feb. 25 in two highly-anticipated games.

And according to the Monroe United players, SMCC better watch out, too.

“We’re doing pretty good. A lot better than in the last couple of years,” said Zub. Zub is no stranger to the ice himself; he has been playing hockey since he was only four years old.

If you haven’t come out and witnessed this talented team in action, now might be the time to do it. Admission is cheap–$3 for students with ID and $5 for everyone else. Just like basketball games and football games, there are themes for each home game as well.

Tonight, Jan. 3, there will be a home game against Chelsea at 7 p.m. The theme is Red Out, so come on out and support the team. For January, the rest of the home games will be at the Monroe Multi-Sports Complex on Jan. 19 and Jan. 25.
