Monroe High School Soroptimist Club or S-Club has been busy this school year and has hopes to continue the generosity past the holiday season and into the new year. The members started off this school year by participating in volunteering at a senior home in Monroe to run a Halloween party. The girls played games, handed out candy and got to talk to a lot of the residents and build friendships with them.

Senior Autumn Nash-Thiess, the club’s president, said that the event turned out really well.

“It was successful, everyone was so happy that we were there and it felt good to be able to talk to them because it was obvious to us that many people did not,” Nash-Thiess said.

The club, along with Trojan Interact Club, adopted a family for Christmas. The family included three young women for whom they collected gifts, clothes and shoes.

The club has always worked closely with Paula’s House located on M-50. The club doesn’t have any plans set in stone but its members said they plan to work with them in January and February.

“Working with Paula’s House is very eye-opening to our members because even though the women and children have very little, they’re still generally happy,” Nash-Thiess said. “It helps us all realize that there’s always something to be thankful for and that we should make the most of what we have.”
