How I Became Lurch

Drama Club and being a part of it was a wonderful experience in my life. This experience was simply provoked by my personality. I’m a guy who mostly gets along with lots of energy, sometimes dramatic and fun.

It all started when I was in class when Mrs. Drougel had mentioned “The Addams Family” play. I remember not having any interest whatsoever. It was the last thing on my mind; I had never been in a play before. She said, “You’d make a great Lurch.” I had a little idea of who that was since I had just watched “The Addams Family” movie a couple days before that discussion. I said “The Frankenstein dude?” Drougel was showing me videos of this “Lurch” character and had told me that she would really like it if I auditioned. I was a bit skeptical about the situation, but I don’t like to let people down, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

I was in the commons about to go to the audition when I came across a good friend of mine, Johnathon McNamee. It had made me more comfortable when he told me he was actually going to audition as well.  So I was more intrigued like, “yeah I’m going to do this now; maybe it’ll be fun.”

When I auditioned, I sang my ABCs (best believe I sounded like I was related to Beyoncé). When the acting portion came, I was nervous because I only knew a few of the people there, and it was really awkward for me.

Eventually, time went on and the auditions had come to an end. When I had found out I had made it, my heart was beating really fast I was like “oh boy! I’m going to be a star!” I quickly looked at the list to see if McNamee had made it too, and he did! That was it. That was all I needed to keep me going.

Throughout the months of doing the practices, I made so many friends. It was actually pretty fun. Theatre actually brings you together with people you have never met in an extravagant way. It is a place where you all can just be yourself and express yourself and let out the inner you, the “weirdness,” the “goofiness” be – but the thing is, everyone is involved, no one is left out and no one judges you for being a bit extra. Theatre was a great experience and it brought me closer to people I never thought I would ever socialize with. I honestly wish I could do it all over again.
