MHS choir takes New York
April 15, 2016
The MHS choir is taking it to the “Big Apple” at the end of this April, from April 27-May 1. This trip, a trip that is taken every other year, is the cause of much excitement throughout the talented students in choir.
“Times Square, where they do New Year’s Eve, that’s what I’m most hype about,” sophomore Tristan Daniels said. This trip will be his first with choir. He also said he is quite excited to sing.
The group’s trip, although they will be sightseeing and enjoying themselves, also comes with a purpose as Daniels mentioned. The choir will be performing at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. This historic and beautiful venue has been around since 1828 when it was founded.
Another newcomer, junior Seth Ferguson, said that he is most looking forward to seeing musicals while he is there. They will be seeing “Aladdin” and “Wicked” on Broadway during their time in NYC.
However, the choir will not be completely cut off from students back here in Monroe; the group could be seen in the back of a live taping of The Today Show. Senior Cody Kosanovich expressed that he is very excited for this part of their trip.
This is not all of the choir members’ first trip to NYC, however. Junior Zach Everly will visit for the second time.
“My favorite memory from the first time is probably seeing “Matilda,” because I just love Matilda,” Everly said. “This time, I’m really looking forward to seeing The Statue of Liberty.”
This will be the first year any of our current MHS students will visit Ellis Island and the historic statue that lies there; to keep the trips exciting for everyone, they alternate the activities in which they will partake. The Statue of Liberty made the cut for this year.
Another New York veteran, senior Rachel Kellan, recalled that her favorite part of her sophomore year trip was visiting Ellen’s Stardust Diner. This diner is a high-energy venue, basically your everyday diner, except it is 1950s-themed and the wait staff sings to you. Ellen’s Stardust Diner is also in quite the iconic location; it’s right on the corner of Broadway and is right down the street from Times Square.
With all of the excitement of this trip, there are sure to be many songs, stories and pictures to follow.
