We all remember the rumors that used to circulate throughout the schools and how destructive they could all become. Even closer to the objective at hand, we’ve all watched Mean Girls at least once and can recall the burn book. Why do children create such horrible things to try and break others down? More importantly, what does it all even accomplish?
This epidemic of childish proportions has never truly died, but instead increased in severity. Lately, this act of ridiculing people has gotten worse and within the decade has spread to the place it could be viewed for all time – the internet. With websites like Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace, bullying and “burn-” type games have never been made easier. This gives students a better chance to mock people and at bigger proportions.
Recently, MHS has made use of the popular site, Facebook. Students have created pages of which the objective is to make fun of students. However, life is not a movie and ridiculing students can have dire consequences.
Many students don’t realize that one little joke can turn into something much more serious than the joke’s intentions. With that being said, in the last few years many cyber bulling incidents have happened and lives have been lost due to simple words someone has expressed.
Once something has been said, the meaning of it has already soaked in and it has begun to take its toll. How far will people go to try to make a statement or a joke and at what cost? When will people begin to realize the consequences of the actions of which they have chosen to enact?
