On Saturday, Jan. 10, the class of 2016 hosted the first-ever MHS Volleyball tournament which saw massive success in support and profit. The tournament occurred even with consecutive snow days the day before the tournament, and six teams participated in the exciting event.
Team OVO-FC took the crown, but it wasn’t easy. After a close first-round win over senior Andrew Boczar and the Money Roe Riders, junior Drew Siebarth led his team through a hard-fought win over the determined Seniorit15 team that featured all seniors.
Once in the finals, Siebarth and his teammates once again met up with Boczar and the Money Roe Riders. In the best game of the tournament, team OVO-FC eventually won the thrilling match, 29-27 in tiebreaking fashion.
“I’m excited for the next one,” said OVO-FC member junior Cameron Delben, who was one of 36 participants in the competition.
One team featured chemistry teacher Jim Davis, who played for the Volleyball Ninjas team that received fifth place. In what was considered one of the best moments of the event, Davis dove for a ball going out of bounds and managed to keep the ball in play for his teammates.
“It was good to see all the participants play,” said class of 2016 consultant teacher Lisa Sellers, who helped run the tournament.
Sellers, along with class officers juniors Nick Schmidt and Madyson Farris, made a profit of more than $800 for their class. However, this came with massive support from Cakes by Stephanie, who provided concessions for spectators during the tournament.
