The MHS girls varsity golf team won the Monroe County championship Monday, Sept. 29. The match was held at Carrington Golf Course. This is the girls’ second consecutive year winning the tournament.
Sophomore Maiya Hegyi was happy to be playing in her first county tournament. She said she was a little nervous but was sure that everything would work out.
As defending champions, MHS got to pick the course at which this event was held. Carrington was picked because it is local and convenient for everyone.
Senior Jaclyn Fanola shot 70, junior Jordan Sawatzke shot 83, senior Somer Nocella shot 97, junior Lauren Malik shot 104, junior Kacy Hall shot 108 and sophomore Maiya Hegyi shot 112 to finish out the team.
Hall said she felt like she could’ve done better, but was content with her score and how the rest of the team did.
Fanola, Sawatzke, and Nocella made first team all county. Malik made second team all county. Each all-county team had seven girls.
Not only did Fanola lead the Trojans, she was also the medalist for the tournament. She beat the second place finisher, Airport’s Olivia Reed, by 16 strokes.
Other competitors at the tournament were Bedford, Jefferson, Airport, Huron, Summerfield, and Saint Mary’s Catholic Central.
Monroe won with 354; Huron was second with 403; Bedford was third with 415; Summerfield was fourth with 465; SMCC was fifth with 537; and Jefferson was sixth with 542. Airport did not have a full team; therefore, they could not be scored.
Varsity and JV coach BJ Hoppe said, “354 is one of our best scores we’ve ever shot. I’m very proud of our team and am happy with how we finished.”
Monroe also played Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Bedford Invitational. The Trojans placed fourth with a 370 against some very tough competition. Saint Ursula Academy got first place, with a very impressive score of 310. Brighton took second with a 341 and Saline took third with a 344.
Fanola again lead Monroe with a 76. She ended up in a three-way tie for third place.
