After a short absence, Monroe Middle School history teacher Alan Barron was reinstated Monday, June 2, as a teacher on his team. Barron has been a history teacher at MMS for the past several years.
“I am delighted to be back, and I appreciate all the support I have been given. I received so many gifts and flowers,” said Barron.
Many people around the community planned to attend the board meeting on June 3 to support him, including former students and parents, after he was put on paid leave resulting from an incident in his classroom. The incident revolved around a history lesson involving the Jim Crow laws and segregation.
Others supported him on social media during the time of his absence. Eighth grade student Amari Aaron made t-shirts.
Sophomore Fisher Blackmore said he is glad Barron is back but sad that he is retiring.
“Mr. Barron was one of my favorite teachers. He was really funny, and I don’t really know that many people who didn’t like him. He helped me out a lot in school, and I am really grateful for him,” said Blackmore.
Sophomore Courtney Cadle had Mr. Barron for U.S History and said he was definitely one of her favorite teachers.
“He is a really light-hearted teacher and really cared about each and every one of us,” said Cadle.
Barron retires in two weeks, after 36 years with the district. He has been teaching at the middle school for many years.
“I have missed my kids very much, and I am so glad I am back teaching,” said Barron.
