On Monday, June 9, Carol Sliwka’s Sophomore English classes attended a writing marathon field trip in downtown Monroe. Out of her 121 students, 111 students were able to attend the field trip. The field trip gave an opportunity to do some extended writing in a new place, which helped the students get creative and do things they normally wouldn’t do in the classroom.
The buses left MHS at 9:15 a.m. and drove the student downtown to meet their chaperones; each group of six had a chaperone to that group. The buses returned to MHS at 12:15 p.m. after the students finished their lunches.
The students that were eligible to attend had to have a passing grade, no missing work, and fewer than six absences. This was the first field trip Sliwka has planned since working at MHS and she said she possibly plans to do another field trip.
Sophomore Jalen Scott said it was a lot of fun having the field trip because it was something out of the ordinary. Even though before we left was a little bit confusing and crazy, the writing activities we did were really fun, and it was a big success.”
Sliwka’s classes weren’t the only ones attending the field trip, Alison Drougel’s journalism class also tagged along, and the writing activities were focused more around the newspaper.
Sophomore and journalism student Kacy Hall said, “This writing field trip really helped me out with writing, especially for the newspaper. The things we did will benefit me in the long run.”
