English teacher Carol Sliwka has been planning to put together an anthology of student work for the end of this year, which is going to include writing, pictures of artwork and other creative projects, that will fit into teenage age group.
“It does not have to be classwork as long as it was written this year. Keep in mind space constraints as well. I would say that it should be less than 1200 words or so,” said Sliwka.
The anthology will be printed in black and white so anything other than writing that is submitted should not rely on color. Students who wish to submit work for consideration should drop into the “Literary Collection” folder in the MHS student folder under Sliwka.
Each student should use first and last names as the name of the file. Each student who wishes to submit should limit their entries to no more than five.
Another thing to keep in mind is the 18th Annual National Student Poetry Contest. There are 36 prizes, four divisions from grades 3-12. Each student may submit one poem via the online entry form (libraryofpoetry.com) or by mail with entries being typed rather than handwritten when possible.
The grand prize winner will receive $500.00; the top educator award will receive one out of ten laptop computers or tablets for participating teachers. The school with the most entries will win a new computer package and a “Spirit of Education” trophy. Prizes for just entering will include a laptop, tablet, iPod touch, or an after school shopping spree with one of 10 visa cards.
