The Monroe High varsity football team “smeared pioneer” at this year’s homecoming game with a final score of 40-13.
Junior Stephen Blunt started the game off with an 80-yard touchdown on the first play. He later scored runs of 59 and 31 yards.
“It felt great to get the team excited with the first touchdown, but it felt even better to get the win and knock Pioneer out of the playoffs,” said Blunt.
Cousin of Blunt, junior Dathan Dickerson, scored two touchdowns, and a two-point conversion run.
Dickerson said that it was a good night for him and his team.
Monroe’s only score that didn’t come from Blunt or Dickerson came from senior Paul Jung, a German foreign exchange student. He beat the school-record with a 47-yard field goal.
“I thought the field goal was going to be too short because I did my first step wrong, so I was really nervous it wasn’t going to make it,” said Jung.
Jung said he didn’t know he had the school record until after the game when his coach told him.
Antjuan Simmons was the only Ann Arbor player to score with a 79-yard touchdown, but the Trojans didn’t let that affect them.
During the halftime festivities, the traditional ceremonies of crowning the court king and queen were held. Seniors Riley Delben and Charlie Frank were crowned royalty.
After the disappointing loss to Saline a couple weeks ago, team captain senior Tyler Kellems was happy with the win against Pioneer.
“They knocked us out of the playoffs the last two years; it was good to finally beat them so now they can’t get into the playoffs,” said Kellems.
Monroe now has a 5-2 record and will go on to play at Bedford this Friday.
