Monroe’s varsity soccer played successfully in a game against SMCC Saturday ending with the score of 3-2. As we all know when it comes to most sports, Bedford and SMCC are our rivals. So to Monroe, this win is a very big deal. This also means that MHS gets to keep the soccer trophy for another year.
Although this game was very close, Monroe came out with a win. The game tied and the teams had to go into a shootout. This is when the teams take penalty shots until a team scores first. And to our surprise, Monroe’s varsity was the team who succeeded with getting a score.
Varsity soccer player senior Maher Awad said, “Although we won I was disappointed that it was a close game. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that we still get to keep the trophy, but I wish we would have won by a long shot.”
Monroe JV’s soccer came up unsuccessful against SMCC with the score of 2-1. Even though JV lost they still played a good game and put up a good fight against SMCC. For a while the score was tied, until SMCC scored the winning goal with seconds remaining of the game.
JV soccer player sophomore Xavier Turnage said, “I am very disappointed in our lost because it was a big game. But hey, you lose some and you win. But we do have next year to win this game and now I am looking forward to that game once it comes.”
The next game that JV and Varsity will have is Thursday, Sept. 26 at home. The game for JV will start at 4 p.m. and Varsity will start at 5:30 p.m.
