Aaron Hernandez, a tight end on the New England Patriots who was having a great first couple years as a NFL backup and was being a considered as a top NFL tight end, had his career slammed to a halt when he was connected to a homicide in a July 2012, possibly becoming this decades OJ Simpson. On Aug. 23, Hernandez sat in front of a grand jury and stated not guilty. (sportingnews.com)
Currently in police custody for being connected with the shooting, he is still one of the top suspects in the current court case. Hernandez is charged with first-degree murder in the June 17 killing of his friend Odin Lloyd, 27, a former semi-pro football player and also faces five accompanying weapons charges. After being asked six times for his plea, all six times he answered in a clear voice “Not guilty” (USAtoday.com).
The trial is still at the start but should be top news due to the high profile of Hernandez. With the victim being a friend of Hernandez and also having played football with Hernandez in the past, a conflict of interest has become suspect; however, nothing has been confirmed and an investigation remains ongoing (USAtoday.com).
The hype this summer not only gave a hit to Hernandez, but also to his former team who released him right after being taken out of the facility in hand cuffs. Hernandez has already received a $9.25 million of a $12.5 million signing bonus witch hit the Patriots with a hit on the salary cap (USAtoday.com).
Hernandez may not ever play football due to the connection of being associated with a murder, and this shows how one big night and one act can affect the whole life of one man and hurt an entire NFL football team.
