Monroe High school is a place to learn for all students, but if an incident occurs, then it can distract everyone around the incident, which could take away time that could be used for learning. But the school year of 2012-2013 made great improvement in the relief of these distractions, according to assistant principal Otto Zillgitt. He reports that discipline incidents dropped by 44 percent.
Zillgitt provided numbers as high as 534 fewer incidents reported to Monroe High for this school as compared to last school year. With 2,170 less tardy referrals and 69 less phone referrals reported. With more than 1800 students in Monroe High, 1400 students have at least one tardy in a class, which means two-thirds of our school has at least one tardy.
When telling about the drop, Sophomore Sonny Johnson said, “Wow, there was a drop in incidents?” When hearing this it showed that students don’t really pay attention to things like tardies or phone referrals. Unless it’s a fight in the lunchroom or in a classroom, students like Johnson say they are not directly affected by the drop.
On the other hand, some students do realize that the drop is taking the school in a better direction. This could possibly show the future of Monroe High and how it could be going in a positive direction. “It’s good that less students are getting in trouble,” said junior Mallory Robert.
With the way Monroe High is going and the positive direction the drop is going, if things continue the way they are, maybe in a couple of years the drop could be even less of a factor. Who knows; the incident rate maybe even at zero one day.
