According to Michigan Live, 43-year-old Raulie Casteel of Wixom, who is the current suspect for the I-96 shooting, was in Oakland District Court on Nov. 14.
On Oct. 16, shots were fired on I-96 and around the surrounding Michigan counties. An estimated 24 shootings occurred and after a long search, police have finally been pointed to evidence of this shooting. According to freep.com, a 9mm Ruger handgun was found at Casteel’s home, a 9mm shell casing was found in the windshield wiper track of his dark gray 2009 Chevy Malibu, and bullet fragments recovered from vehicles struck in the roadway shootings matched Casteel’s gun.
This dangerous happening has caused a lot of worries. Although the last shooting took place on Oct. 18, citizens and commuters around the area are still taking caution until the suspect is convicted and it is proven that Casteel is the shooter.
I-96 commuters aren’t the only ones that are fearful; many US-23 drivers are nervous as well. Being that I-96 runs into US-23, many travelers have postponed their trips around these areas.
Monroe County Community College student Evin Daniels discussed his fears about traveling along the surrounding area. “I think it’s crazy. I mean, I just went to Ann Arbor recently with friends and the whole time we were on 23, I was expecting to get shot down.”
The shooter not only shot on I-96, but he also the surrounding side roads as well. The shootings spanned over four counties – Oakland, Livingston, Ingham and Shiawassee. Another man was questioned and accused of being the shooter, but eventually was let go.
Students who commute to school fear that the shooter could strike again. Dylan Bastyr, a senior from Highland, Michigan, gave his opinion on how he is being affected by the shootings. “A lot of people in the area are avoiding I-96 as much as possible,” said Bastyr. “I can’t even drive to school without seeing a cop or two.”
