Due to recent droughts throughout different places in the world, the National Bacon Association in the United Kingdom has reported that there will be a bacon shortage. Have no fear, more recent reports have come out saying that there will not be a shortage of bacon or pork products; but there will be a rise in prices (slate news.com).
According to CNBC, the first site to originally report the shortage, the drought has taken away vital food for many farm animals to feed on, including corn and different grains. As a result, herds of swine are growing smaller to accommodate for the lack of food. Since there will be less pigs, the prices of pork and bacon are due to rise in the coming months.
“The economics of the current drought are likely to nose up prices for bacon and other pork products next year, by as much as 10 percent,” Foxnews.com reported. “Simply put, the talk of scarcity is hogwash.”
The United States is dealing with a smaller percentage of pork reduction compared to nations that reside in Europe, who have to reduce some of their herds by over 10 percent, while the US is only reducing their sizes by three percent. The prices should not rise over four dollars per pound, according to the president of Paragon Economics Steve Meyer, who is also a consultant to the pork industry. The rise will mainly affect people with low incomes who already had trouble purchasing such products before the fluctuation (cnbc.com).
Bacon-lovers have no need to worry and can go on worshiping their bacon to their hearts content as long as they are ready to pay more than before. For now, there is not a shortage of meat of any kind, and hopefully, there will not be one in the near future.
