Last Friday night, Monroe rushed onto Bunkleman Field hoping to crush the Saline Hornets and conquer another Trojan victory, but fell flat losing 13-20.
The tension was high as Trojan fans were hoping for the sixth win, which would guarantee the Trojans to be in the 2012 playoffs. The fact that it was Trojan senior night and the “Neon Out” made the game more intense.
Play paused in the last two minutes of the game as senior Donovan Matthews laid motionless and eventually was taken to the sidelines. The Monroe football players and the Monroe pep club all took a knee to respect Matthews as an ambulance arrived for him to be driven off of Bunkleman Field.
Senior Jacob Nadeau scored the first touchdown of the night, making Trojans take an immediate lead on the Hornets. Along with Nadeau, seniors Nate Daniels and Gaetano Paolino formed a Trojan triple threat leading a powerful rushing attack in the first half of the game.
With only a few minutes left until half time, the Hornets stung their way up to the Trojans making the game a tie with a score of 13-13.
With the third quarter passing by swiftly, Monroe and Saline were neck and neck attempting to stop one another from taking a lead.
As the fourth quarter began, fans became anxious to see the outcome of the game. Within a few minutes, Saline’s running back dashed for a Hornet touchdown giving Saline the lead.
The Trojans rushed into action, knowing that every second on the clock counted. Despite the fact that this was Monroe’s first loss, the Trojans can still be accepted into the playoffs by getting one more win. Trojans are now 5-1 and are playing away at Ann Arbor Pioneer this coming up Friday.
