“Let me put it this way, if there was a “me” in every school, (my best friend) would be their me,” said senior Cody Martell, a candidate on this year’s Homecoming court.
But what exactly is a “me?” Well, Martell sure is one-of-a-kind “me” here at MHS, probably as well-known as Regina George at North Shore High.
Everybody in school has heard his voice at least once, being that he does half of the announcements with fellow court candidate senior Austin Washington every Monday during second hour. That seems like a pretty important job for just a high school senior, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Martell said his senior year is filled to the brim with activities. After school, he spends time with physics teacher Kyle Christensen for ping pong club and science club, of which he is the president. Along with that, he is a part of NHS, student council, and is a Monroe Public Schools student public media relation specialist and attends meetings.
One might think that with all that on his plate, he would spend the rest of his time sitting at home watching Adventure Time and making cookies, and one would be right. But that is only a small fraction of what he does. After school Martell goes to one of his two jobs as a lifeguard, either at the YMCA or Jefferson Recreation Center. Martell also teaches five to 10-year-olds how to swim, and he has his own swim team of 10 to 13-year-olds that he coaches, who came in second last year in a competition.
When Martell is out of school, he said the first thing he plans on doing is attending Monroe County Community College for his first two years (well, actually, the very first thing he plans on doing since he was a child was to buy one MegaMillions lottery ticket). He also plans on renting an apartment with senior Reid Heiser. Martell said he plans on becoming an anesthesiologist and part-time astronaut.
