A suicide bomber from the Taliban attacked Afghanistan’s capital on Wednesday, May 2, shortly after President Obama left. The housing compound was attacked via car bomb and assailants disguised as women. The attack killed seven people (reuters.com).
The attack came after security was heavily tightened for the President’s visit and the anniversary of the slaying of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. It marks the second attack in the area in less than three weeks. In his speech broadcasted to America, Obama said, “We broke the Taliban’s momentum. We’ve built strong Afghan security forces. We devastated al-Qaida’s leadership, taking out over 20 of their top 30 leaders” (miamiherald.com).
The President was in the country to sign an agreement involving the presence of U.S troops in Afghanistan. Almost 90 minutes after Obama’s departure, the attack took place. Six of the seven killed were innocent passers-by. According to the article on Yahoo.com, the Interior Ministry reported that 17 more people were injured. The identity of the seventh person killed is not known at this time. Many Afghan children were on their way to school when the attack occurred.
Three members of the Taliban took part and were all dressed as conservative Afghan woman with traditional long robes. Afghanistan soldiers rushed the scene of the crime and gun shots and explosions erupted and lasted hours after the attack. Things did not calm down until 10 a.m. All of the attackers were killed.
A member of the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attack. He said, “This was a message to Obama that those are not real Afghans that are signing documents about this country; the real Afghan nation are those people that are not letting foreign invaders stay in this country or disrespect the dignity of our country” (yahoo.com).
