On April 20, 21, and 22, former students from MHS participated in the first annual alumni play directed by Sue Sacks, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The play was used as a fundraiser for the drama club.
The cast members were decided by Sacks, regarding former students she’s directed in the past.
“I called the people who were really good in high school, and young adults who are also currently involved in the community theater,” said Sacks.
Alison Drougel, who graduated in 1997 and is also a current MHS staff member, played the role of Marcy Parks.
The cast also involved Nick Whittaker who is a current student at MHS; he was a replacement for a former cast member. Whittaker played the role of Coney Bear, who takes third at the spelling bee.
The rest of the cast also consisted of Tim Middleton, Class of 2000; Emily Porter, class of 2002; Joshua Mohler, class of 2005; Jessica Stotz, class of 2006; and Briana Alvorez, class of 2010.
Backstge crew consisted of members of the current MHS drama club: Sarah Bray, Jessica Cousino, Devin Mataya, Sara Humphries, and Stan Halstead.
The play is about 12-year-old students all attending a spelling bee. It’s a well-known “corky show,” said Sacks, “for a very mature audience.”
The play was a fun way for current drama club members to be able to interact with former theater actors/actresses.
“It was so much fun. I met kids that Sue worked with and experienced how they had fun. They were all a lot of fun to be around and they’re the kind of people I look up to,” said junior Sarah Bray.
