We live in a country with 10 recognized federal holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The major holidays generally are tied to important historical events, recognize people or are a commonly held religious observance. More importantly for me, and a good portion of my fellow students, these holidays usually mean a day off of work or school.
There are other holidays, however, that don’t entail any of these things. What purpose they serve, I don’t know. April Fools Day is a good example of a holiday that seems as though somebody just made up for no good reason. I don’t know if anyone actually observes them, but they do exist. Here are some others that take place in April.
April 3- Don’t Go to Work Unless it’s Fun Day: According to holidayinsights.com, no one is really sure who came up with this holiday. The celebration is pretty self explanatory. If you enjoy your work, you attend; if not, you don’t. It is the holiday for slackers.
April 6- Sorry Charlie Day: This day is for feeling bad for yourself for any unfortunate circumstances you have had to deal with. It is a time to take a moment, or day, to wallow in self pity. Then celebrants are supposed to succeed anyway, or at least go about their business (http://www.zanyholidays.com/2009/04/sorry-charlie-day.html).
April 13- Blame Somebody Else Day: This observance always falls on the first Friday the 13 of the year. It is for everyone who is convinced it is not their fault. All scapegoats are fair game (http://www.ehow.com/how_2330857_celebrate-blame-someone-else-day.html).
April 28- Kiss Your Mate Day: This is the day for all married people to pucker up. If “what the world needs now, is love, sweet love,” then spread some around. Spread some cold germs too (http://holidayinsights.com/other/kissyourmateday.htm).
