The County of Monroe was hit with the number one storm this year.
On March 15 at 7pm, Monroe was struck with one of the worst storms since the summer of 1997. Four tornadoes were spotted in Monroe County, which left people both excited and frightened.
“At first I was excited by the rotation of the cell, but after the funnel formed I was scared,” said biology teacher Kristen Hovest, who watched a funnel cloud form in her backyard.
Ping pong-sized hail fell on Monroe. Rain and lightning devoured the sky, leaving a deadly effect, and plenty of floods throughout the streets of Monroe. Winds got up to 56 mph blowing over trees and knocking over power lines.
“Lightning just lit up the sky when the tornado passed by my house,” said freshman Logan Dicarlo.
Dexter had a tornado touch downin the neighborhood. It brought down and destroyed 100 houses, leaving 20 houses untouched. Local hotels, churches, and The American Red Cross have stepped up to provide help to the families who have been affected by this disaster.
Other tornado spottings were on Dunbar Rd., Monroe St., in the city of Lambertville, and at Custer Airport.
Things like this are not common in a town like Monroe, according to Fox2 News. This sort of event left the citizens of Monroe in shock.
“It was cool at first,” said junior Dustin Jones, “I was bowling at [Monroe] Sports Center right on Monroe St., when it all happened. At first I thought nothing of it, until it got bad, and then I didn’t know what I was going to do because I had to drive in it by myself.”
