We live in a world where children and teenagers die on a daily basis, sometimes for no reason at all. The world is changing and no one seems to be able to keep up with it.
There was a 17-year-old high school student, Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed on Feb. 26, 2012, by George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman (www.abcnews.com).
Eye witnesses say they heard a cry for help then a gunshot. Zimmerman was found holding a gun over Martin’s dead body. Zimmerman had a bloody nose and a small wound on the back of his head, claiming Martin attacked him, though all Martin had on him was a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea, he had no weapon.
I think Zimmerman should go to jail because he killed another human being; he was a neighborhood watchman, not a cop. He was told not to pursue Martin, and he did it anyway, ending with a child being killed.
Zimmerman was not arrested. He told the police that it was self-defense and the police continue to accept his claim.
Our communities all over the world are reacting to this crime with petitions and protests. We have made history with the fastest growing petitions online in internet history. One petition has reached about 900,000 signed names to arrest Trayvon’s killer, George Zimmerman.
Murder is murder, and Zimmerman should be thrown in jail. No child deserves to die. Schools are protesting and professional basketball teams are supporting the family.
The reason for Zimmerman not being thrown in jail is due to the “stand your ground law,” which means a person can use a certain amount of justifiable deadly force. I personally think that the law should not apply to Zimmerman because he isn’t a cop.
