On Jan. 10, Monroe High varsity girls’ basketball team had an away game against Ann Arbor Huron. Ann Arbor defeated Monroe by 22 points, with the final score ending up at 47-25. Ann Arbor’s team is ranked 99 and while Monroe is ranked 137.
The entire team gave its best effort, but sophomore, Taylor Carol, really stood out in the game by scoring 8 points and having 7 rebounds.
“It was a difficult game, I feel like our defense was awesome, we just couldn’t pick up on offense,” said Carol, “But we definitely want a winning season this year. I also really want to improve as the season goes on.”
Head Varsity Coach Gretchen Elliot said too many mistakes were the cause of our defeat. “The Ann Arbor Huron game was not a good game for us. We had way too many turnovers,” she added.
Morgan Petrangelo agreed with the other players of the team stating, “We did good the first half of the game, we had the ability to stop them but after the first half we just couldn’t stop them, and it seemed that everyone kind of just gave up.”
Marissa Wilson said that the team has improved and is learning more and more while they play as a team. “We had a great defense, everything just kind of sucked and went down-hill after half time,” she said. “We want to have a winning season, since last year we had a losing season. But we have improved a lot more since last year’s season.”
This was a much more difficult game, seeing that when Monroe faced SMCC, the score was 56-40, and Jordan Strauss scored 33 points of that game at the beginning of December. Wilson and Petrangelo both agree that there weren’t any big plays at this game.
