Monroe High Schools varsity soccer team got an official word they will advance to districts against Woodhaven on Oct. 17 at home.
The team normally makes districts so the consensus was they were not surprised. The players said they are excited about the outcome of the game, though.
“I feel good about it because we can make it to regionals, and we have a good draw,” said senior Aaron Lockard.
The team’s last seasonal game was also away on Oct. 9 against Bedford.
“It’s the best season I’ve had yet playing soccer at Monroe,” said Hill.
Hill said he believes the hardest game they’ve played this season is Pioneer.
Lockard said he remembers Huron as the team’s best game for teamwork.
“I think my best game was whenever I had four goals; I don’t know what game that was,” said Lockard “But the Huron game was the best game we’ve played as a team.”
Lockard said the highlight of the season was when Connor Tullis scored a game winning goal against Riverview, or his header.
“There were like three minutes left and Connor scored from way outside of the 18,” said Lockard “or when Jordan Banks crossed the ball in and I used my head and put the ball in the goal.”
“The easiest game we’ve played was Thurston because they were terrible,” added Lockard, “and another team that we beat four to zero, I can’t even remember who.”
The coach Larry Roman also feels good about the outcome of districts. He said he is very happy with his team this year.
“They played several tough games against tough teams from Ann Arbor and even came away with a win against Huron,” said Roman. “The seniors led defensive group and our tri-captains provided the necessary leadership to allow Monroe to come back from these tough matches.”
Roman also said he believes this leadership and hard work made this season a success.
