MHS boys’ varsity soccer took a victory last Wednesday 2-1 at the home field against Fordson High School.
During the second half, a fight broke out between a Fordson player and junior Lance Shields. The Fordson player grabbed a hold of Shields and dragged him down to the ground. Monroe players, including junior Brynley Powers, rushed over to help.
“I was pissed,” said Powers. As Shields was being attacked, Powers defended by punching the Fordson player. As the fight began to escalate, the referees took over and the game resumed.
In the last two seconds of the game, Co-captain and senior Adam Dushane took a penalty shoot on Fordson to win.
“I was confident in my ability to win the game but at the same time, if their goal keeper guessed right and saved the ball, there would be nothing I could do,” said Dushane.
Dushane said about getting the goal, “I wasn’t surprised that I made it, I was ecstatic that it was the winning goal.”
The first half started out with great focus coming from all areas of the team. The teams were pretty even at this point and kept it an intense game of running back and forth. Shot after shot was taken on both goals. Goal keeper for Monroe senior Doug Underwood defended our corner not letting anything past him as he tried to encourage the team to keep it up. By the time the first half was up, senior Travis Cunningham scored a goal, assisted by Dushane.
As the second half started, Fordson quickly found out that Monroe was not going down without a fight.
“They were getting frustrated and anyone could see that,” said Dushane.
When the game ended, varsity was pleased. “I was happy with the game; we are better than what we played,” said Underwood.
