On Saturday, Feb. 4, Monroe High’s boys’ varsity hockey team had a game against New Boston Huron High School. The final score came to 6-5 with Huron taking the win.
Monroe had a strong start but lost focus throughout, which cost them the game. Their offense was good, but defense was lacking and turned over the puck too many times. Monroe made good passes but failed at back checking, said senior Alec Swindeman.
“We needed to communicate better and keep more control of the puck in our zone,” said junior Ricardo Canales.
During recent practices, MHS have been trying new tactics and working in new plays with the old. The new plays are coming together but will continue to need more practice. The team needs to work on defensive zone coverage and paying more attention to their system, said Swindeman.
“There are little mental lapses here and there with defensive problems that we’ve had,” he said.
Monroe might have lost this game but they will continue to practice hard and focus on coming together as a team. They need to practice working with what they have on their lines and being complete as a team, said Canales. MHS seems to work well as a whole but have little errors that cost them the game.
“We play well at times, but we need to play well the whole time,” said Swindeman.
