On Tuesday, Jan. 17, MHS varsity girls’ basketball team had an away game against Skyline High School. Monroe took the lead in the first quarter, winning the game with a score of 62-42.
Going into the game with a positive attitude, Monroe took on a competitive team. With great defense on board, MHS fought through a very physical game and rowdy crowd at Skyline High.
Sophomore Taylor Carroll, who played post in the game, said the crowd was loud and unruly.
“We all had to keep our cool because the crowd was loud and yelling inappropriate things,” explained Carroll.
There’s an old saying that the most important thing to determine altitude is attitude. Carroll said that everyone on the team went into the game knowing they’d win and that’s just what they did!
“Everyone expected to win because Skyline High is such a small school and you always have to go into a game with confidence anyway,” said Carroll.
Junior Chelsea Dixon made captain this year for MHS girls’ varsity basketball. During the game against Skyline, Chelsea had good defense and stood her ground when things got heated. “The game was really physical and the girls had to stay focused,” she said.
“We had really good defense through this game. That’s how I got my nose busted. There was even blood on my uniform,” Dixon said.
Monroe had to keep their head in the game and knuckle down to stay in the lead. They were able to keep up with the girls using man-to-man defense and win the game.
“The game was very physical. We expected that going into it, because it was like this last year when we played Skyline,” Carroll explained.
With this win, they accomplished their victory and were able to hit the 500 mark for their league.
